about

This song was inspired by the profound words of a dear friend who was speaking at his son's memorial service. Sometimes we do everything that the Bible says to do in a given situation and yet sometimes our desperate prayers seem to go unanswered. What do we do when our faith is challenged and shaken? This song doesn't answer these age-old questions, it just speaks to how we must go on from there.

One Foot
© 2023, Jeffery L. Stockford

VERSE 1
I prayed, I cried, I screamed, I tried
to do everything that I could, so you would be well
I quoted each verse but instead things only got worse
The heavens drowned out in my mind by the roaring of hell

VERSE 2
I felt lost, bruised, tossed, and confused
With a sorrow all my doctrine can’t reconcile
It’s raw it’s real but despite what I feel
I’ll let you go and know it’s only for a little while

PRE-CHORUS 1
As I tearfully kiss you, goodbye
I’ll refrain from asking God, “Why?”

CHORUS 1
And just keep putting one foot in front of the other,
With my unanswered questions through the darkest night
Believing His nail-scarred hands still hold me
‘Til I reach my home and faith is made sight

VERSE 3
God’s light through the black with the wind at my back
I am propelled into vistas of grace yet unexplored
What the cross has finished has not been diminished
God’s goodness still stands, and somehow my joy is restored

PRE-CHORUS 2
Your presence sooths and satisfies
So for now, I’ll put away all my “Whys”
Because He has taken away my sin
So, I know that I’ll see you again… till then

CHORUS 2
I’ll just keep putting one foot in front of the other,
With my unanswered questions through the darkest night
Knowing His nail-scarred hands still hold me
‘Til I reach my home and faith is made sight

CHORUS 3
I’ll keep putting one foot in front of the other,
With my unanswered questions through the darkest night
Believing His nail-scarred hands still hold me
‘Til I reach my home and faith is made sight
And everything will be made right
